This year will be the 25th Annual Alumni Golf Outing – The John Sanders Memorial. In commemoration of this event, we would like to remember John J. Sanders. John (1928 – 1998) was an outstanding athlete at Lakewood High School, where he played football, baseball, and basketball. He attended Miami University on an athletic scholarship and played football and basketball. He later earned a master’s degree in physical education from Case Western Reserve University. He began teaching biology and physical education at Olmsted Falls High School in 1952, and became assistant principal in 1960. He was the head track coach at OFHS for 33 years. He was known across the state of Ohio as a coach, an official, and a promoter of track and field. He was also an early advocate of women’s participation in sports. Olmsted Falls had the first co-ed track team in the area. John was one of the founders of the Olmsted Falls Schools Endowment and Alumni Association in 1995, and even though he was not an OFHS grad, he served as the first director for the organization until his death in 1998. John was elected to the Lakewood High School Hall of Fame in 1989, the Ohio Cross Country and Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992, and he was inducted into the Olmsted Falls High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 posthumously.
